Is It Depression or Dementia?

Figuring Out When to Refer Elderly Clients for Cognitive Testing

This CE presentation will provide an overview of the cognitive and behavioral profiles of both depression and Alzheimer's dementia, with particular emphasis on how these conditions present in elderly clients. Dr. Peter Hildebrand will discuss ways in which these conditions overlap and why they are often mistaken for each other in clinical settings. He will also provide guidance on when it might be beneficial to refer a client for neuropsychological testing, and what the therapist and client can expect from the testing process.

Peter Hildebrand, Psy.D., earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2021 as a member of the neuropsychology track at Pacific University in Hillsboro, OR. He works as a clinical neuropsychologist at Appalachian Counseling and Psychological Services (ACAPS) in Asheville, NC. He also serves as a member-at-large of the WNCPA Board.
